What is gardenland?

Early in the summer of 2005, I decided to take up gardening. I didn't have a yard nor had I ever gardened to save my life. So I took up container gardening. I bought my first plants from K-Mart -- 99 cent cherry tomato plant and a 1.50 strawberry plant. That was the beginning and my garden has done nothing but grow since then. Gardenland is the chronicle of my (mis)adventures.

I apparently have a lot of stuff in my garden right now...I thought it was time to at least document what I have, what I've killed, hahaa, and what I've got going on before suddenly I'm in a forest. A strange one with pots.

Digitalis [Foxglove]

Yes, I am aware that foxglove leaves are poisonous, but they are very fuzzy and pretty. My cat doesn't really eat plants and since they're outside on the patio, he really doesn't even come in contact with them. Why do I like them? When they bloom, they've got these pretty bespeckled bell-shapped flowers. Hopefully next spring I'll have lots of flow shots of them. Just a note -- these suckers get BIG, as in very tall. Like 4-6 ft kinda tall. So be prepared to snip them back to keep them in a height you like. Also, these plants are called perennials, but actually they just tend to reseed themselves and grow rather a lot. So I've heard them termed biennials too. Also, watch out for watering...that's how I killed both of my Camelot Cream foxglove plants and the reason why I'm germinating more:P~

Above: Excelsior Apricot Foxglove, actually kind of infested with some bug under the leaves which I shall be killing forthwith. XD Has orangey pastel like flowers.

Current Plants:

Digitalis (Foxglove) [Silver Fox, Excelsior Apricot, Summer King Red]
June Bearing and Everbearing Strawberries
Alternanthera Purple Knight
Dwarf Marigolds
Achillea Yarrow [Millefolium Cassis]
Cherry Tomatoes
Pineapple
Herbs [Chives, Rosemary, Sage]

Current Seedlings:

Basil
Apple
Cherry Tomatoes
Bell Peppers [Green, Gold, Red]
Squash [Zuchinni, Yellow]
Nasturtium
Onions

Germinating:

Cantelope
Digitalis (Foxglove) [Camelot Cream, Camelot Lavender, Viridflora Yellow]
Red Plum

Below: Summer King Red Foxflove. I had to prune it back a lot today, as some of the leaves had spots and I didn't want it spreading. The leaves aren't as fuzzy as the other foxglove I have and are more round. Not infested with anything XD

Below: My favortie so far of my foxglove. This is the Silver Fox digitalis. The leaves are so soft and furry! As you can see, they are also silver green, like sage. The flowers for this bad boy are suppsoed to be a purple/pink/white/silvery type of mix. I can't wait for it to bloom!

Non Edibles

I've atcully been collecting more non-edible plants lately than edible, it seems. Not to say that I don't have my share of food crop, but...well. Anyways, moving right along...

Above: Yarrow. I wanted both red and yellow, but for whatever reason, the red one is the only one that's gone on to produce anything. I haven't had flowers yet -- a poppy seedling used to share this little space with the yarrow, but it had a bad bought of sunburn and kicked the bucket:PBut the yarrow is growing rather nicely, what with all the heat we've had lately.

Below: Are my dwarf marigolds. They flowered a little and have pretty much not done anything in a month, but I can see flower buds on the bushes. I also used to have the large 18 in marigolds and they were very very beautiful...until the grasshoppers came and ate them. -_-;;

Above: This is Alternanthera Purple Knight. I got this as a gift with one of my shipments from Hazzard's Greenhouse. It's a little sad looking because of the stint in the mail, but boy, she's gonna be a pretty plant once she gets going! I have her in the shade because she jsut got planted and I dont want to sun burn or stress her even more.

Right: My lone little Nausturtium sprout :].

Below: My cactus!! It's ancient, from the time when anything that couldn't survive on its own ( ie, a cactus) would be killed within a month of me having it:P I've had it for years, but kept it small.

Food Stuffs

My whole gardening experience was brought on by a couple of friends and then having to pay so much for certain foods at the grocery store. Meet my first victims...

Below: Cherry Tomatoes. I've had these since I started gardening and they are....ridiculously large plants. o.O So much so that I've been reluctant to plant their big brothers for fear of what sort of mutant they may turn into. These are over four feet tall x_X

Below: Strawberry time!! I have managed to kill a lot of strwberry plants, but hey, I'm still working hard at it:P These are my new everbearing gems...They're a little sad since they just got out of the mail. Also in the shade for a few days until they get more strong after the mail trip.

Below: My lone June bearing survior. It really likes that pot and the basil o.O (Berries on the right, basil on the left.)

Below: And while we're on fruit...here are my little apple sprouts!:D A snail ate one of them, but I've got a few more seeds and such germinating the pot, so no worries. Yes, I know these turn into trees. I figure I can dwarf the sucker.

Below: Pretty obvious what this is. This was the third thing I planted, from a pineapple I had bought and then ate. ^_^ They supposedly take a year to grow...1 pineapple..o.O

Above: Onion sprouts!!! Basically green onions...I'll be estastic when they get bigger and more useful:P But they like cooler weather and it's been pretty hot lately....yes, I trim them weekly. They grow tall and lanky fast.

Below: The jungle of bell pepper plants. I kileld the first transplants I ever got, so I set about growing my own. Um....there's a lot of them. Something's eating on them right now, but I can't find it. *sigh* Well at elast there're a lot of them -_-

Above: Those are squash. I haven't a clue which is yellow and which is zuchinni, but I like em both. I'm gonna move them to a longer and bigger pot soon, especially since more seeds are coming up o.O

Below: My herbs!!! Sage at the left, Rosemary at the right and teeny basil sprouts on the bottom :D I killed my other rosemary and sage, so these are my newer ones. They just got here too, so they're acclimating to the outdoors and soil and stuff too. All in the shade.

Below: More basil in what used to be my cantelope tray before I killed them XD

Below: Chives!!! I have some chives in my monster tomato pen too, actually.

Below: Newly planted tomato cuttings!

Above: An older tomato cutting.

Below: How I do my cuttings -- I get a stalk from an intersection and I cut it off, put it in some water until roots start growing and get a descent size, then Iplant them in dirt. XD

That's it!:D
